WORKS REPORT Experience report

Oita River Dam Construction

Oita City, Oita Prefecture

Akihiko Higashi,

Director of Construction, Construction Department

I am a director of the "Tomijima-Maruiso-Mizutani-Yamazaki Joint Venture," which has 16 employees and about 120 workers at the Oita River Dam.

The Oita River Dam is under construction about 21 meters upstream of the Nanase River in the Oita River system. Our major works here are excavation of foundations, material collection, and the filling of the dam itself along with the orders received from "the Kajima Corporation-Takenaka Civil Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd.-Sumitomo Mitsui Special Construction Contractors.”

Our company has one of the largest numbers of machines in Japan, and I believe our strength lies in the fact that we can engage in large-scale construction works that make full use of such heavy construction machinery.

Since entering the company, I have been engaged in various domestic and international construction works and acquired extensive skills and experience. At the site of the Oita River Dam, one of the largest dams in Japan, I find it rewarding and pleasure to see the Dam has been excavated and filled exactly in the way as I envisioned.

Unzen Fugendake Sediment Control Dam Construction

Minamishimabara, Nagasaki

Koshi Nakano,

Chief of Construction,

Civil Engineering Division,

Construction Department

I am a filed observer in the construction of the Unzen Fugendake Sediment Control Dam. I have been engaged in this construction work as an operator since my first year with the company, and I have been overseeing the entire project since my sixth year.

The technology of unmanned construction, in which a series of operations such as excavation and transportation are all remotely operated, was developed after the eruption disaster in the '90s. As a pioneer in unmanned construction, we have applied the technology to the construction of the Unzen Fugendake Sediment Control Dam.

Since unmanned construction is done while looking at a monitor, it is difficult to understand the distance without a three-dimensional feeling, and it is less efficient than working on a machine. Thus, it is important to have a schedule that takes these points into account when managing, but I often feel that my experience as an operator comes into play.

Unmanned construction is a specialized technology, and I find it rewarding to be e in such a particular construction that not many others are doing. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, unmanned construction has been attracting more attention, and we feel it is our mission to improve and inherit this technology to the future.
